I did came across such problem. I don't think anything other than
gnome way or editing xorg.conf works. You can try creating a new
xorg.conf using ?Xorg -configure command. Test with this configuration
file then copy it.
I have found the solution to this problem after a long time. I
installed the tool called xdebconfigurator. After installing it, i ran
the command 'xdebconfigurator' which show the configurations supported
by my display adapter which included higher resolutions than what was
being automagically used by X. Then I generated Xorg.conf file using
the 'dexconf' command and restarted gdm and everything worked fine. I
was able to select all the higher resolutions and frequency my display
adapter supported. :). Hope this is helpful to those with the same
problem.
