Greetings!
The "CDs for Grab" page has been very useful.
Recently, I had sent CDs to friends at Pondicherry,
Trivandrum and New Delhi. It takes only about Rs.25/-
to Rs.50/ - to send a set of CDs through SpeedPost. I
received blank CDs in exchange from my friends. Fair
enough.
I am wondering if we could expand the "CDs for Grab"
page to spread across the different cities/states in
India.
Let's say person A, living in city X can't find a CD
that he wants or doesn't have the time to download it.
But, he/she is going to city Y for a conference. If he
finds a person having the CD in city Y, he can get it
from him. Especially in the industry, when you travel
a lot, and don't have time to download ISOs, this
information can come in handy. We can also simply ask
them to mail the CDs, and we can send them blank CDs,
in return.
This will definitely be a huge database, considering
the number of cities in India, and the areas within.
I see two methods of implementing this:
1. Sourceforge.net project:
We can maintain a repository that contains the list of
people with the CDs they have, and other relevant
details. Of course, a person needs to be able to
download this huge file. This is better than having to
download sets of CDs.
2. Online:
We can implement this database online, so that,
through different search methods, the database will be
searched, and list of entries will be displayed. This
can also be a final year project - writing the user
interface (php) and connecting it with the database
(mysql).
Maybe, phase I can deal with expanding the databse
with data from different cities in Tamil Nadu. We must
make requests to different LUG group members to add
the list of CDs they have to the "CDs for Grab" page.
We can then expand our database to the states of
India.
In course of time, we can span across countries and
finally continents!
