IMO, it will be useful to convert Word to plain text, so that you can
export it to any format in future.

Separating content from presentation will help in long-term
maintenance. Otherwise, it becomes a vendor lock-in.

I suggest 'pandoc' which can convert any type of document to several open
formats like latex which will help in long-term preservation and
maintenance.
