Its great to see small countries like
Nepal coming out with such a Open Source initiative, but why not such
things happening in India. I am intending to mean that nothing happens
in India, but I feel we are a but sluggish. Why don't each state come up
with a localized version so that installing localization support is not
an issue and regional languages are available on fly. Correct me if am
wrong, but this shows low level of awareness about localized FOSS
softwares in India ;)
Government support to the field of IT is negligible - just for name sake.
Compared to India, it is nothing. Don't ask about FOSS. Those in the
government don't know what it is. Not to say the political turmoil. But
even here, Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya came up with Nepalinux (I think it did
get something out of the IndLinux).
Of course, MPP is mostly govt funded. It surely doesn't have the mandate
and money provided to the likes of NRC-FOSS or the RCILTSes or the likes.
If you are looking for volunteers also, it will be very difficult to find -
not like India. Very few, but committed.
As far as I know, compared to Nepal, a lot of initiatives are there in India
in this direction. But there is lack of co-ordination and co-operation.
Most of the times, many of those centres/groups will be just reinventing the
wheel.
Before starting to do something, it will be good if some time is spent
trying to learn what is going around in the same direction.
