However, it's also interesting to explore some other angles to this. 31337
has traditionally been a unix backdoor port; it's really open to debate if
31337 speak pays indirect homage to these original crackers.
Thanks Cheeni - I remember an early Usenet spam posting (about '93/94),
in which a script-kiddie said "I am Elite - Gimme Warez!" or
something to that effect. That was the first direct reference to
the term 'Elite' that I saw, and at the time, I had no clue at all as
to what the posting meant. My sysadmin at the time, Sean 'Xibo' Coates, who
was a minor net.personality at the time (he presided over alt.angst, and
was also a counter-weight to another net.personality who went by the name
of Kibo (alt.kibology)) just laughed off my enquiry, so it must have been
well-known terminology by that time.
BTW, an earlier mail of mine to cheeni.net bounced - just a mention of
a BusinessWeek article on Wikis - it looks like the suits are taking
notice of it.
