[PCB_FORUM] Re: Polarization in assembly data

Depends on you (or I should say "on your library creation standards").

If you have picked arbitrary rotations when you create your library
parts it is a MAJOR issue. If you are disciplined and always use the
same rotation when you create your library parts it is only a minor one.

When I set up the library at a prior employer I made sure to always use
the same part orientation when saving the part. Never had a problem.
When I worked at another company later, every designer "rolled their
own" library parts without standardization or even general direction.
Major hassle, especially when designers saved their libraries into a
central "library" and other designers used them without double-checking
this :)

Actually, I am not sure fabmaster or other third party tools actually DO
handle the underlying issue, as I think they depend on pin numbers. If
everyone doesn't call pin 1 the positive one, or the cathode, or
whatever, I think they break down as well.

Hopefully this is addressed by third-party library creation software
such as that sold by pcblibraries.

I've always thought this was a funny issue. The component report
includes a
rotation column, but it is a rotation from an arbitrarily drawing
footprint,
so it is useless data to the assembly house.

I think that is why many of them prefer the fabmaster data.

I have never been asked this before, but a cm asked why I had no
polarization sense in the pick and place cad data. i.e. for diodes and
tantalums. They had not even asked for one of the 3rd party outputs
like
Valor, Fabmaster or Circuitcam, just the component report out of Allegro
in
.xls format. So how does that work? Does Allegro have a property you
can
attach in the footprint that will come out in any of those reports?
