Actually, I think I figured out what happens. If I plug in the usb keyboard
after I turn on the unit, I get text read as braille. If I plug the usb
keyboard in before turning on the unit, text is read as text.

Selecting computer braille gives you text input. I had similar issues
myself
when I first started using my Icon.
