Hi Kathy:

I experience the problems you describe when reading emails.  Sometimes left and 
right arrowing will enable you to go above or beyond the specific line that 
you're stuck with.

As for using the first item of a letter in a list to find what you're looking 
for, if you're looking for a second folder or item that starts with the same 
letter, you'll have to type the second letter of that item in order for it to 
appear.

For instance, say that within the list of folders in your email reader, you 
have a folder called bookport, and another one called braille plus.  If within 
the folders list you type B bookport will likely be the first folder that will 
pop up.  But if you want to get to braille plus, you'll have to type br in 
order to be able to see it.  Hope that helps.
