Chicago officer files countersuit against estate of teen he fatally shot.USA
Today (2/7, Madhani, 5.56M) reports that a Chicago police officer who fatally
shot a 19-year-old college student “and accidentally killed his
55-year-old neighbor has filed a lawsuit against the teen’s estate
seeking emotional and punitive damages.” The counterclaim filed by
officer Robert Rialmo claims that the student, Quintonio LeGrier, “acted
in a ‘criminal...malicious and wanton manner’ leading to the
shooting that has caused ‘extreme emotional trauma’ for the
policeman.” The December 26 shooting deaths of LeGrier and Bettie Jones
“added to mounting tension in this city that was already reeling from the
release of a police video in late November that showed a white officer, Jason
Van Dyke, fatally shoot a black teen, Laquan McDonald, 16 times,” USA
adds. Within hours of the December incident, “police acknowledged that
Jones was ‘accidentally’ killed by the officer responding to a
domestic disturbance involving her neighbor LeGrier.” The Chicago
Tribune (2/6, Gorner, Pratt, 2.17M) reports Chicago Police Officer Robert
Rialmo filed a lawsuit Friday against the estate of Quintonio LeGrier, a
19-year-old that he had fatally shot late last year, “arguing the
student’s actions prompted the shooting and caused the officer
‘extreme emotional trauma.’” According to the Tribune, the
attorney for LeGrier’s father, who filed a wrongful death lawsuit,
“was incredulous at what he called the officer’s
‘temerity’ in suing the college student’s grieving
family.” The AP (2/6, Tarm, Keyser) explains the “unusual
lawsuit” came “amid city leaders’ efforts to win back the
public’s trust after several cases of alleged police misconduct.”
Yes; that will "win back the public's trust" - sue a family after your cop does
a spray-and-pray that kills a bystander. KGL
