Subject: [hsa] Identify and repair an original Pennsylvania muzzle loader
Greetings All,
I had the pleasure of shooting yesterday with fellow HSA club member, Dr.
Mark Schultz, who showed me an old muzzle loader that has been in his family
for generations (pictures below). He would like any information he can get
on it, and more importantly, he'd like suggestions for era gunsmiths that
might be able to get it back in working condition.
From what he knows, and from the measurements we made yesterday, the gun is
as follows:
. Original Pennsylvania type muzzle loader made sometime in the early
1800s.
. Smooth bore, measured to be 0.385 inch diameter, with very thick
barrel walls.
. Octagonal barrel 31.25 inches long.
. Firing cap ignition, with double set trigger system.
. Crude front post and rear notch fixed sights.
. The only markings we could find on it were stamped on the outside of
the action "ATKINSON WARRANTED".
. We did not disassemble it further looking for more markings.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please relay them to Mark at
DrMarkRudolphSchultz@xxxxxxxxx.
Thanks very much!
