Occasional layoffs have been a way of life at EMC.
When I started at EMC 20 years ago, I replaced someone who was laid off. HR
called me after my offer letter arrived to say “we had a layoff, it does not
effect you, just wanted to let you know the offer was still valid” then some
mumbo-jumbo designed to make me feel “unscared” about the layoff.
Severance back then was 2 weeks. The separation package has gotten much
better and, unlike some small companies I have worked for, EMC does not try to
screw people out of options when they are decruited. One small company I
worked for used the line “you know those options you worked for years for ....
you missed vesting by 5 days, sorry, you’re SOL” on a laid off employee.
After one of the big ones, people were were laid off got cardboard boxes for
their personal effects; those being moved to different locations got plastic
crates – thus leading the the question “did you get paper or plastic?”.
And, in recent years, laid off EMC employees tend to surface as rehires in
other departments.

The current cuts are simply balancing EMC's cost based on an updated revenue
picture for the industry and were anticipated well before the Dell acquisition.
Our CFO reminds us - EMC has ended Dec 31 with more employees than on Jan 1 of
that year for as long as people remember - selective cuts more than offset by
new jobs in new departments and products. At some point when growth slows
decisively and portfolio shows diversity in opportunity you have to start
adjusting your cost base.
2016 is going to mark an important page in the IT infra industry (storage,
compute, networking), with start of a 24 to 36 months of shake out and
consolidation. By some analyst (not EMC), the industry needs to shed 150K jobs
globally.

Hoping any of our crew at EMC will survive the blood letting -or enjoy a
really good separation package. Following the move of most corporation of lay
offs either just before or just after holidays..
