I noticed this on one of my amateur radio reflectors. Perhaps this might help someone. cln Meanest man on Emeralds Drive -------- Forwarded Message -------- Ubuntu 11.10, USB devices, and brltty Posted by: "Harry Bloomberg" hbloomb@******.com Fri Oct 21, 2011 6:07 pm (PDT) I recently upgraded one of my Dell Linux netbooks from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10. Much to my dismay I was not able to control my Icom IC-7200 using the USB port. After many emails to W1HKJ in which I made false accusations about a bug in Fldigi, I did some further research and found the following confirmed Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brltty/+bug/874181 As near as I can tell from reading this bug, a Braille utility named brltty is grabbing the USB port and not allowing other applications to use the port. The proposed solution is to remove brltty. I did this and I can now control my IC-7200 again via USB. I suspect others having problems with USB control will have the same issue. So if you can't use your USB and you see a message in your kernel log about brltty attaching to your USB port, try removing brltty (unless of course you're blind and are actually using brltty). I think the default Ubuntu configuration should be to not run brltty. I'm all for accessibility in computing, but to quote Mr Spock, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." 73, Harry Bloomberg W3YJ ______________________________________________________________________________ Highland Lakes Linux User Group (HLLUG): http://www.hllug.org HLLUG mailing list: //www.freelists.org/list/hllug
