Corky reminded me of Dale Gustin (how could I have forgot him; he gave me many lessons). And Corky remembered George Polson's name, who had been the Marine fighter pilot. Also, a few minutes ago I remembered John Miller, Ted Sprague and Fred Lawrence. It's hell when one can't even remember what he forgot . . . . ----- Original Message ----- From: archer martin To: mkelley323@xxxxxxx ; hhsc1@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 2:15 AM Subject: Re: Passing of Ned Kelley There is a bunch of us who owe a tribute to Ned, and I am one of them. He got me started in soaring in 1967. The occasion was a meeting that he initiated in the bar room of the old Baron Steuben Hotel. The upshot was a nucleus of veteran and student pilots for a newly energized HHSC, which had fallen on bad times. It was then, or close to then, that Ned was elected president, and rightly so. We started out by operating out of Schweizer's at the Elmira airport, under the tutelage of a former Marine fighter pilot whose name escapes me. We were there because the county was paving our runway (for the first time, I believe), in preparation for a national contest. Some of the names that I remember from those days are Rolf Beyer, Dieter Ennulat, Heinz Weissenbuehler, Juergen Loenholdt, Howie Trampenau, Ken Sliwa, Frank Christian, Pat Ryan, Mike Teter -- and I betcha I've forgotten others. Then came a real strengthening of the club, with the arrival of Roy McMaster. And not long after, our 2-22 was supplemented in one year by four (4!) 2-33s. (Look in the hangar you new guys. . . .) Of course, none of this would have happened without the schemes of Paul Schweizer. He regarded the near-death of the club as anthema that he felt compelled to repair. So did Ned Kelley. ----- Original Message ----- From: mkelley323@xxxxxxx To: hhsc1@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 12:57 PM Subject: Passing of Ned Kelley Particularly to those members of Harris Hill Soaring Corporation from the early 70's, I want to let you know that my Dad, Ned Kelley, passed away on New Years Eve in Leesburg, Florida, at age 90. He was a past President of HHSC and an avid tow pilot at the Hill. He received great pleasure in being a member of the Club and the friends he made there. He spoke frequently of that fondness right up until his death. His obituary is in the Elmira Star Gazette dated 12/27 and will be in the Leader dated 12/28. Whether in a sailplane or a tow plane, kindly tip your wings and think of him the next time you're flying. He'd get a kick out of that. Happy New Year to everyone!
