There are some smart phone apps that work pretty well for the same purpose.
I've been using a free one called "MapMyWalk".  It uses GPS to track where
you go, and calculates distance along the way.  The only annoying part is
that it periodically gives audio updates for your distance, pace, etc that
you can't seem to turn off, but you can turn the volume down very low within
the app.

Subject: [heartofvabirds] Measuring Distance for Traveling Checklist

Hey all,

I have been wanting this feature for a long time and Google Maps just added
it recently...I think. You can measure distances if you zoom in, right click
on a location, and select "Measure distance" option. This will make it more
accurate when submitting traveling checklists. No more 'guesstimating'!

What is the distance to the dam?:
