Unfortunately, this only works in a perfect world, where people do not reply to
mails in order to write completely new mails to a mailing list, and where all
mail clients actually support preserving the thread IDs.
Since that simply isn't the case, the threaded view often works rather badly in
Thunderbird in my experience.

Therefore I even consider using the subject as the actually superior solution --
in practice, not in theory. Haiku's mail kit is also using only the subject line
in order to fill the MAIL:thread attribute, and I see little reason to change
this.
