[haiku-development] Building freetype within Haiku

I am unable to build freetype within Haiku. I looked at the bep file
at
http://ports.haiku-files.org/browser/haikuports/trunk/media-libs/freetype/freetype-2.4.9.bep
and used it to try to build manually.
I'm using a VM image but I have the Development optional package installed.
When I run the configure command shown in the bep I get invalid host
type warnings and then a bunch of syntax errors on configure:
