This is apparently a misconfiguration in Ubuntu. It is tracked in
[https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zlib/+bug/1155307]. According
to that bug report the issue is specific to 32-bit builds. So you simply
shouldn't force that (I assume you did by configuring with `--use-32bit`).
