"Shell out"? I'm not sure what you mean here. Shell as in "Terminal", or ... ?

I know about the very old collection of sample code that Be Inc. made
available for BeOS developers and wasn't sure if that is a good resource or
not.

It is. There's also the Haiku API Examples
(https://github.com/drcouzelis/HaikuApiExamples), or Haiku's source
code to look at.
