I'm pretty sure I have the foxfire book that has the section on shoe
making, somewhere around here...

I've always wanted to try soap making. I have read about it in some old
books I have called the Foxfire Books(That is where I got the crazy idea to
build a log cabin years ago). They have everything from stories, recipes,
soap making, wooden locks, to folklore and moonshine.

In the pictures where I am building it I am 12 or 13.

Hippies and the like make soap all the time :-).
So it should be doable. I can probably ask around my friends network
and find somebody (probably SCA) who's done it, if we want to invite
them to do a class...

I am running low on soap from facemadics and it looks like they don't
sell soap anymore. I see a guide that seems pretty easy to follow on
wikihow http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Soap, but it involves lye
and heat.
Maybe I don't really don't want to go down this road, or maybe I have to
find specialty equipment, or a better place, but I can put some of those
litmus strips I have to use. You can pretty much sway me one way or the
other.
