Youre right Simon, there is usually outside interest. Each class is open to
the public, (except welding / machine tool) classes. Classes are one of the
big ways we get new members. If you have a hands on activity, and require
materials, you can also charge for it. The money goes to fund HackPGH
activities and tools.
The main thing we need to work on is advertising, and I think recently we
stepped up our game on that with brochures, stickers, meetup.com, and etc.
We can do even more for that. If anyone else has advertising ideas, please
share them! From my experience, advertising above everything else
determines how popular a class is. The problem is not that nobody in
Pittsburgh is interested in learning programming, the problem is that most
people don't know we offer such things.
The Python/Raspberry Pi classes should have their own series like the
Embedded Learning tracks. You can definitely teach it multiple times. I
also agree about winter weather, and thats a good reason to have it
multiple times.
