Hi all --
Actually, this is probably a dumb question that I can answer myself, but I
thought I'd throw it out for comment:

My brother (sighted) has been doing research on comparative religions and
has been studying the Quran in depth and has been very interested in some of
the misconceptions people have about it. Anyway, I asked him to send me a
piece of his research as he is writing a large document comparing references
to the New Testament, and he sent an email full of Sura and verse numbers
for me to read but no quoted text. So I downloaded the only translation of
the Quran available on bookshare.org and asked if he had read that
translation, which he hadn't, and asked if I could send him the text so he
could compare it. But unfortunately, I told him that there were all kinds
of nasty copyright notices and agreements you make when downloading and
unpacking stuff from bookshare, and since he isn't blind I thought that even
if I sent him the html version, it would be breaking the agreement. So he
told me not to send it.
But the Quran is available in text in all kinds of translations all over the
internet, which I found later -- but if a sighted person wants the html of
an e-book downloaded from bookshare, is it a serious infraction to share it?
Again, I suppose it is, and so I didn't send it. Just wondering if other
people have run into the same situations.
(Oh, and by the way -- the bookshare.org copy of the Quran is really lousy
in that it has no navigation markup -- it is one long text doc, and while
the Suras (chapters) are labeled, there are actually no verse numbers. So
if you ever have a desire to read the Quran yourself, get it from the net
instead of bookshare.org. I'm sending bookshare an email about the quality
of this book they have scanned, and I think I will also send them a link to
the site my brother gets his translations from, which again is all free and
accessible and contains many translations. I don't have the URL handy at
the moment, but if anyone wants it, just email me and I'll send the url.)
Take care.
