Heavy snow has brought havoc to New York's Central Park where it is feared up to 1,000 trees may have been destroyed. The National Weather Service said the snow was so wet and heavy the branches of many trees in Central Park cracked and broke under the weight. Teams of park workers are now trying to clear fallen branches away in time for the New York City Marathon which takes place this weekend. A spokesman for the New York Road Runners said: "We feel very comfortable that things will be ready for Sunday's marathon." Workers are racing to clear the park in time for this weekend's marathon Trees up to 4ft wide have been toppled by the storm and many paths have been closed while workers clear the area. The snowfall damaged about half of the park's 800 acres and could end up destroying 1,000 trees, a spokeswoman for the Central Park Conservancy said. It is estimated that it will cost $500,000 (£314,000) to repair the damage and replant lost trees. The snowstorm that hit New York on Saturday was the heaviest for an October since records began in 1869. Vanessa The Google Girl.
