 Hello to all.

Here is the brief reports on Software Freedom activity at Kannur

(*) The Software Freedom day was celebrated on 29th August at Parishat Bhavan
Kannur.
(*) It was attended by over 40 people.
(*) The function was inaugurated by Shri Gangadharan, KSSP ( Kerala Shastra
Sahitya Parishath) member who spoke on the freedom matter elaborately.
(*) It was followed by 3 hours of technical session.
(*) live demo on free software OS & application packages were shown using
OpenCd & Knoppix CD.
(*) Few CDs of Knoppix & OpenCD were also distributed.
(*) There was lively discussions on the subject.
 (*) More activities are planned

Most of the audience were first timers, and not aware of the free software at
all.
The meeting was very successful and follow up actions are planned which will be
conducted soon. The members are much impressed by the concepts of the freedom
in using the software without any limits. All of them could become aware of the
numerous applications available to use freely.

 Follow Up actions
 -----------------

(*)It was decided to form a group and work towards spreading the messages to
wider section of the people. As part of the follow up actions, free software
awareness programs will be conducted in few schools.
(*) It was pointed out that teachers should be told and convinced about
freedom of using the applications and distributing it. Though few schools
wanted to try GNU/Linux in their schools ,they are reluctant to use it because,
the softwares supplied by IT@SCHOOL project works only on windows platforms.
One such package is the "softexam" software provided by the Govt. department.
Softexam 1.0 prepared by the IT@School project works only on windows based
platform.( see the link
http://www.teamebiz.com/case_studies_soft_exam.htm). A GNU/Linux version of the
software is not yet available to schools.
(http://www.keralaeducation.net/local/more05june04.htm). So A GNU/Linux port of
the software is an immediate requirement.

(*) Next week, we plan to have Free Software seminar plus demo at one school
near Kuthuparamba, Kannur.
(*) Four sections of Kannur collectrate already migrated to GNU/Linux. This is
a major milestone as far as govt department is concerned.
