Hi Friends,
Â
I thought some of you might be interested in the text of an email sent to me by my friends in the Bronx. You may have seen the recent report on poverty in the U.S., indicating that the Bronx region remains near the top of the list ofÂthe most impoverished regions of the country. The impact onÂchildren, in particular, is discussed in Jonathan Kozol's poignant book,ÂThe Shame of the Nation (2005).Â
Â
I have asked NorthportÂstudents at FordhamÂto spread the word. Perhaps the NY Committee of Friends and/or others will want to know more about the situation. My friends, Liz Figueroa and Julio Pabon, would be happy to come to talk to any interested group, as long as a meeting would be held in the city.
Â
At the very least, I am planning to join them on Nov. 4 in the Bronx. If you'd like to come, please let me know.

Email text:
Hi everyone - The stats are out and once again the Bronx and its children are at the bottom of the totem pole! Poverty and all its ramifications are taking their toll on our children and youth. Last year a few Faith based organizations decided to stand up and march to bring attention to our youth in the Bronx. This year (I have joined the group), we are trying to raise funds (EVERY little bit helps) to purchase banners, noise makers, posters, arm bands , permits, music equipment rental, first aid kits, etc for the days events. We need donations from individuals, churches, foundations, etc.

We are also attempting to bring over 400 people to march with us. WeÂare encouraging everyone to come and bring 10 people along.Â

We also need contacts. If you know of someone who has great ideas and talent for putting together programs, flyers, entertainment, chants, video/camera work etc. we could sure use their help. If you know someone at a college (hostos, Lehman), maybe you can reach out to them and inform them of the event.

Keep in touch with me if you can help in any way. "La lucha continua".
DATE OF EVENT: November 4, 2006
TIME:Â 12:00PM TO 4:00PM
MARCH STARTS AT St. Margaret's Episcopal Church (940 E. 156th & Kelly St) and goes to
BRONX COUNTY COURTHOUSE (Grand cncourse and 161st).
The Bronx Faith March for Children is a project of the Children's Defense Fund of NY and Resurrection United Methodist Church.
