dear friends,
at last night's meeting, the nuevo amanecer water situation took on new
urgency. since the diesel generator broke for the last time several weeks
ago due to zero maintenance, a nonprofit has been delivering water to the
300 residents in a tanker. their participation will end sept. 30, but
friends and/or students can keep up the deliveries for about $200 a month.
friends voted to support the deliveries for october and november. in the
meantime, since efforts to find a solar panel-pump system appear stalled
after two years of research and with its cost estimates having risen to as
high as $35,000, which exceeds our bank account, members voted to fact-find
the possibility of a new diesel generator at an estimated cost of about
$4,000. it could be installed when the tanker deliveries stop. cost of
diesel fuel is estimated at around $3,000 per year, but pete white suggested
the cost might be lower and fuel delivery made easier if a tank were
installed at the site. members expressed hope that the diesel system would
only be used for a couple or years, giving time to locate a viable solar
installation at a reasonable cost and with in-country servicing available.
maintenance, training, a warranty and servicing would be mandatory if a new
diesel generator is purchased; these elements were completely lacking with
the first diesel effort, resulting in a much reduced lifespan. the issue of
arsenic filtration remains to be solved. there is uncertainty about whether
the government in fact has ordered the well shut because of high levels.
friends will have a table at cow harbor day, sunday, sept. 27. all are
welcome to show up and sing the virtues of our organization, and a flier
intended to attract new members will be handed out
. at least two card tables
are needed. fliers for hihi's fundraiser will be offered, and there will be
a donation jar, photos and hopefully some stuff to sell.
work on the friends web site is progressing under the management of jen
brady-cotter. it promises to offer much, including a list of
accomplishments, a donation device such as paypal, photos, newspaper
clippings, member bios, college campus activities and contacts, etc. perhaps
most important is a facebook link allowing us to locate former members of
students who might wish to support friends. the goal is to have a working
site in october.
pete again discussed the formation of chapters under irs guidelines.
chapters would handle their own banking and keep their own books, relieving
a burden of time and money on friends. with a hearty show of support, pete
will pursue this option, including the question of whether friends would
have a liability risk for chapters' activities.
