***This is a message from a member of Friends of Students for 60,000*** I was really impressed with this info.  What a great idea.  My son-in-law is often in Africa and I look forward to sharing it with him.  Thanks for sending it on.

This is information I got from my friend Rachel Lindsay (whose mother Peter
met on his return from Nicaragua)

if you haven't already, look up DRY TIOLETS or BAÑOS SECOS. They are
exactly what communities like Nuevo Amanecer need. They even could possibly
be less work and money to build, and every year produce useable fertilizer.
If you are concerned about sanitation you can make ones with two chambers so
the solids ferment an entire year before using. I visited a small community
north of Achuapa called Lagartillo, where a british brigade came and
replaced all the normal drop outhouses with dry toilets, and everyone raves
about them. Honestly, the villagers all love them and have completely
stopped using their drop toilets. Cleaner, don't smell, and their coffee
plants are grown organically and thriving. I was super impressed.

Hi Mike,
Yes, we have discussed this idea before I have different designs to choose from and also know alumni who have experience building these type of toilets. This goes hand in hand with our biointensive efforts and certainly makes more sense. We need to see which design best suits Nicaragua and then identify those contractors that can either learn or know how to build them.

I think this makes a lot of sense and solves several problems at once.

While the booklet is cute I don't think it would sell well as a fundraiser but I might be wrong.? Maybe could be used more as a thank you to those who gave a substantial donation.? If it's going to be sold we need to be careful of copyright issues - most of the drawings seem to be lifted from a book of some sort.? Need to look into that.

hey all-
the family that we built the house for in august made this book for us.

i think it would be very worthwhile to publish and sell as a fundraiser..

Hey all.. Bill I apreciate your thoughts/feedback..
As for the images I know a number of folks that could illustrate
this...or perhaps an even better idea would be to get young people to
do the illustrations..
I see it as a great tool to introduce young children to our work and
organization..
The book could be in both Spanish and English and could be used to
teach basic Spanish to young children as well.. I simply want to
explore the idea and see where it goes..
