***This is a message from a member of Friends of Students for 60,000*** Dear Friends, At last night's meeting, a proposal was made for a multimedia library in Chacraseca, where books and computer access are scant. Amelie Alford, a library science student at C.W. Post, said she and others are trying to raise money and form a campus club to further the project. The cost is estimated at $25,000, and grants are being applied for. Inspiration came from the group Librarians Without Borders. Existing buildings in Chac are not deemed suitable or available, so the building may be of new construction and probably located near the church area of "downtown" Chac. The building, which could have solar power, would also serve as an adult education center and as a community meeting place. Hundreds of holiday postcards have been sent urging people to contribute to a number of specific projects in Nicaragua. Examples are $75 for one week of water deliveries to a community, $35 for one year of primary school for a student, and $1,500 for materials to build a house. If you would like to help distribute the postcards, email pedro831@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; we need more mailing addresses for possible donors. Also, some members are handing out postcards to friends and relatives, circumventing the United States Postal Service completely. Pete White reported that the campaign has already produced more than $2,000 in donations. Our Web site, which has been improved by Mike Cipoletti and Tim Rugile, now has a Paypal option. As they gain more access to the site, further improvements will be made. Pete would like to organize a trip next year to install a plastic playground set in Chacraseca. Previous wooden efforts have produced only fleeting longevity. Apparently a company in Costa Rica might be able to sell the plastic components. Mike says a meeting is set to form a sports league, possibly baseball or soccer, in Chac. Girls will have a league of their own. Members voted to give Conchita Ojeda $50 per month for her extensive efforts to help the group. She already receives a salary from Students for 60,000 and additional payments for organizing trips by groups affiliated with Friends. Mike reports that facts are still being gathered for the water system in Nuevo Amanecer and two nearby communities, with testing to be finished by Dec. 15. Construction could begin in February. Basically, water would be pumped from an existing but currently unused well in Nuevo to an existing tank in La Union, then sent via pipes to homes in the area. The pump would be electric, using a power line extended from La Union. He said about 80 percent of the existing pipes can be used, although many will need to be buried deeper. When a budget is prepared, Friends will be asked to make a financial commitment. Happy holidays to everyone, as we hope to provide even more assistance to the poor in the coming year. *** You can unsubscribe from this list by sending an email to fsf60k-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the subject field.
