Hi Tom,

SQLExpress will convert to SQL Standard.

I have server 2003 set up as AD and an IIs Server running 6.0
You are welcome to mess with it if you like.
They are located at a local ISP.

What is your deadline?

Thanks,

Forest

John:

The four Windows apps are...

1. ACT! Premium, SalesLogix, or Goldmine Corporate or Premium.
2. Enlighten.Net (document management)
3. Some form of MS SQL server (Access db, CRM)
4. CA Threat Manager 8.1

ACT! will run on SQL Express, but SalesLogix and Goldmine require SQL Server Standard. Our sales manager hasn't picked a winner yet so I'm thinking I need to plan for the worst case which is SQL Server Standard, unless SQL Express will upgrade to Standard.

Enlighten.Net runs on MS Server 2003 SP2, SQL Express 2005 and IIS with SMTP and indexing. Threat Manager doesn't need a database and can run off an XP box although I'll put it on the server.

At this point, I can spend whatever it takes to do the job. Enlighten.Net is already paid for via maintenance subscription. I have the hardware researched and ready to order, but I need to pick the OS and level of SQL support.

Why SQL Server 2008? How about SQLexpress for the first step?
As far as IIs. IIs 6.0 was a configuration choice with Server 2003 standard.
I believe there is a IIs 7.0 now.
Be aware there is a conversion program to take access to sql flavor dujour.
What is your budget?

Thanks,

Forest

Subject: [frgeek-michiana] Windows Server 2008

I need to set up a server which will run up to 4 Microsoft apps and possibly
virtualize one or more Gnu/Linux servers.

I have the hardware picked out but don't have a clue what MS OS I need
beyond SQL Server 2008 Standard. I want to migrate an Access app to SQL
Server because we are bumping into the limits of Access, and I need IIS for
an intranet app written for Microsoft OS's.

Do I need Server 2008 in addition to SQL Server 2008 Std.? Does either of
these OS's contain IIS?

I use MS software relatively little (XP at work) and have become fairly
ignorant regarding their products.

I've not yet found Microsoft's web site helpful regarding the basic
components included in their server software offerings, nor is the site
helpful regarding licensing.

Tom
