Don't we have P3 systems to refurbish?

I'm focusing on recruiting volunteers and haven't started a marketing campaign to generate more computer donations. Remember, there is a substantial lead time before corporations dispose of assets. We've turned down several large donations of P3 and P4 systems this winter and spring. If we are limited to P4 systems, and we don't get enough P4 donations this summer, we won't have computers for Title 1 in the fall. The plan is to have plenty of systems prepared so we hit the ground running in Title 1 schools this fall. We refused donations in a significant portion of 2009, and we missed the 2009-2010 academic year so our stock is apparently low. If Ubuntu doesn't run well enough on P3s, we are may be in danger of missing another academic year.

btw, we were not invited to participate in the IUSB electronics collection this year. I'll try to find out what happened. Perhaps they thought we would contact them first; in the past they contacted us. The IUSB collection event is April 9.

Goodwill is shipping 34,000 pounds of computer electronics each month to Dell. With that kind of activity, it isn't going to be easy to start donations flowing to FGM again. Plus, Goodwill is soliciting businesses which has been our domain.

I've been searching high and low for those power supply testers, with no luck. I did locate our power supplies but been focusing on finding the testers. Next time I'm at the warehouse, I'll look again for a bit, but if I can't find them by then, I would suggest that FGM invests in purchasing a few more. They may turn up, though, most likely at the bottom of a gaylord. Can only get so far by climbing around and looking through them.

I further suggest that we start going through all the gaylords and preparing for an ADEC pickup. We may find some useful stuff, as I recently found the plastic jugs that had the audio cables, CMOS batteries, processors, etc. I do know there are a few more P4s out in the storage area, but other than that, that's about it. We do have a lot of stuff for deman though.

We do have several Freeboxes that need updating. I have to ask, how often are there updates for the distro of Ubuntu we're loading onto the Freeboxes? If they're few and far between, then why not download all of the current ones, and put them onto the warehouse server, and set up a network there to pull the updates from the server as was suggested for VL 5.9? Then bring in the new updates as necessary. I think that would work better in the long run, especially if we have to rush some out the door instead of loading them at the warehouse, having volunteers take them home, update them, then bring them back.

I opened the warehouse at about 6:00PM, Dan and his son had
    arrived earlier.

Volunteers attending: Dan and his son Dale, Phil was there with
his girlfriend and our newest Board member Carol attended. We also
had a volunteer who said she had been there on Tuesday and needed
someone to sign her sheet. She stayed only briefly and her name
    escapes me at the moment.

Dale worked on recycling the better part of the night with Dan's
    assistance.

Dan also worked on QA and installation on several freeboxen.

Phil spent quite a lot of time looking for power supplies and our
PS testers as we have several boxes needing power supplies.

I worked on repairing some of the systems we had set aside with
problems and I showed Carol how we deban and refurbish a system
and showed her the basic construction of a PC and the
    identification of the components .

Of the systems I looked at I sent 1 to deman with a bad
motherboard. I believe the processor may be good. Two additional
systems required power supplies which we were unable to locate.
The last system I looked at contained a Nvidia AGP graphics card
which was incomparable with the open source drivers in Ubuntu. I
replaced the Nvidia card with an ATI AGP card and was able to get
    Ubuntu up and running.

Dan and I continued to attempt to sort out the QA instruction
sheet used for final testing. I have still not completed revisions
    on the sheet.

Dan also told me that we have been removing the bottom menu bar
and relocating the top bar to the bottom edge. I'm not sure this
is a good idea as the pager and window selection buttons are
located on the bottom bar this makes it harder to switch between
open applications and desktops. We may want to look at this issue.

The warehouse closed at about 9:30PM

    Thanks to all!

    Mike
