I had a video problems Thursday with the Gateway system on the end. I found myself confused when I looked at xorg.conf. There is no information about the video devices. Ubuntu 8.04 uses Xorg's dynamic hardware configuration so all of the video resolution and color depth information is now kept in memory by the Xorg server. I found this with an explanation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/XORGHardy I have also discovered that there may be a problem configuring X with some Intel integrated video controls in the 800 and 900 series. I belive this may have been the problem with the Gateway. Another issue is whether we want to install any closed source drivers like Nvidea or ATI. I noticed that the Dell I took home to work out new inspection instructions with has a Nvidia card. Note that due to the change in xorg.conf the method used to check the color and video resolution will not work and that X will automatically use the highest resoultion that will work for both the monitor and graphics card. We may have to edit xorg.conf to set the resolution to a reasonable level for 15" monitors. On the 17" monitor I used for testing Ubuntu set the resolution to 1280x1024 which is somewhat above the resolution of my ocular receptors.
