A while back I was tasked with seeing if the Linksys WAP11 Wireless Access Points that were donated were usable or not. In usable I mean as in a secure environment. They were not as they do not support WPA (or WPA-PSK) encryption.

Well that was used to...

In researching the Internet to see if they are DD-WRT flash-able (they are not) I did discover a German site that HAD in fact hacked the WAP11 to make it think it was a D-Link DWL-900AP+. While this in itself is a ho-hum deal, the original purpose of it was to max out the transmit signal strength and other things that were of benefit to German users.

However, where they little beauties come into play is the 2.62b version of the D-Link DWL-900AP+ firmware update. It then allow it to use WPA (and WPA-PSK) encryption! I've been testing one on and off for several months at my employer. With the confirmation well in hand that the cloning a D-Link into a Linksys and it actually works, I've finally got the other two flashed and will be testing them soon.

The one that does work now is available if Free Geek Michiana does not need it. Remember, it is ONLY 11m/bit a second! (Wireless B) I have NOT played with the advanced features that the D-Link firmware brings to the Linksys WAP11 but they do look interesting. It's fair to say use at your own risk if you take the AP outside it's US designated limits.

I'll have at least one of them there Tuesday night. Depends on the time I get to test the second one with.

*IF* by chance we have another one laying around there, I can demonstrate the reflashing of the Linksys WAP11 into a D-Link. It's really fairly simple.

The only problem I have experienced on the original 'test goat' is that the password would seem to get 'lost' and need to be reset but I think that problem has now gone away.

In testing at my employer, I have confirmed connections from my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T30 w/ Intel 2200BG adapter), an newer Apple Macbook and 2 iPhones.
