If we're not going to have a yard sale, then we might sell the monitors by the
pallet on ebay. It could be local pickup only or freight shipping might be
arranged.

:: Vector 5.9 Light

Goose loaded a test box with VL 5.9 Light. The install was a bit slow
because we had 64 MB of RAM to work with, the specified minimum memory
for VL Light. The CPU was a P2/400.

Two problems appeared immediately: Swap wasn't activated, and there was
no GUI browser.

The swap partition was there but had not been formatted or turned on.
Goose ran mkswap and swapon on /dev/hda1. Then he downloaded and
installed Firefox from the VL 5.9 repository. VL 5.9 Light uses the same
repository as 5.9 Standard, and slapt-get is the default package
manager. The desktop manager automatically added the application to the
"start" menu.

We don't know whether the two problems were caused by "pilot" error or
bugs in the installer script. The ISO is clearly labeled "beta 1."
Although VL Light works with 64 MB of memory as advertised, it would
benefit from more RAM.

:: Vector Standard 5.9

So far everybody likes 5.9 Standard. The eye candy is impressive. Again,
it detected sound cards which troubled 5.8. Since none of us are yet
using 5.9 Standard on a daily basis, we don't have in-depth reviews. But
on first blush, the impressions continue to be positive.

Since none of the senior volunteers has asked for the Gateway laptop
which Goose is relinquishing, he plans to install VL 5.9 Standard on it
to see if it handles wifi well.

::  Steel Delivery

I need to empty the first gaylord at our steel recycler this week. Our
steel gaylord is full to overflowing, and Kevin and I plan to start a
second steel gaylord on Thursday.

Goose asked whether we have a balance in our account at the recycler and
whether we can get payment.

:: Food Bank Project

Mike wants to tweak the kiosk. He intends to strip all unnecessary apps,
libraries and kernel modules from the live CD. He will also research
supported wifi hardware in case wifi is required.

:: Perley Presentation

There were about a dozen adults at the meeting. The meeting started late
because some of the parents received letters informing them their
children will be transferred to McKinley primary center to consolidate
English as second language (ESL) support services. Of course, they
wanted to discuss the transfers right away. Second, their only available
digital projector was missing the video cable. Forest responded to an
emergency call from me and dropped off his projector.

In my presentation, I emphasized the PTO is responsible for recruiting
people for the Freebox classes. FGM will hold at least one class per
month in the 2008-2009 school year if the PTO supplies us with people
and we have enough computers.

The current Perley PTO coordinator is leaving. A new coordinator will be
hired and trained this summer. The PTO elected a parent leader who will
provide continuity. I will keep in touch with the parent leader over the
summer so that we are up and running next August.
