FEATURE ARTICLE - Benjamin Franklin's Rules For Failure - Your
Hidden Roadmap To Success
------------------------------------------------------------

---------
By Mark Bowser
---------

You might be wondering why anyone would come up with their own
rules for failure. Particularly, if that person was Benjamin
Franklin. Franklin was obviously one of the most successful
individuals in American history.

The late Jim Rohn (America's Foremost Business Philosopher)
used to say that losers should give seminars. Why? Where else
could one safeguard their life for success. Think about it. If a
loser taught us everything they knew about living a life of
failure, all we would have to do is stay away from what they did
and do something different.

Ben Franklin's strategy for success by avoiding the rules of
failure is pretty wise. In fact, in his autobiography, Franklin
admits he learned this the hard way by following the rules of
failure at one point in his life.

So, here we go. On November 15, 1750, Benjamin Franklin wrote
in the Pennsylvania Gazette his Rules for Making Oneself a
Disagreeable Companion. Franklin knew what failures thought.
They unwisely believe that "Your Business is to shine; therefore
you must by means prevent the shining of others..." In order to
accomplish this dubious distinction, here are Franklin's rules.

1. If possible engross the whole Discourse; and when other
Matter fails, talk much of your-self, your Education, your
Knowledge, your Circumstances, your Successes in Business, your
Victories in Disputes, your own wise Sayings and Observations on
particular Occasions, &c. &c. &c.

I think we all have known a person like the one Franklin
describes. Self-centered, arrogant, a name dropper, a know it
all. How did you like spending time with them? We looked forward
to it every day, didn't we? Not likely. Usually, we try to avoid
those people like snow on a summer day.

Now, the big question. When did you behave like the person
Franklin describes? Notice the word "when." If we are honest
with ourselves, I believe most of us have been that person most
likely multiple times in our life. Now it is time to walk a
different path. Next time you are in a conversation, ask
questions instead of talk. Listen instead of debate. Serve
instead of take.

2. If when you are out of Breath, one of the Company should
seize the Opportunity of saying something; watch his Words, and,
if possible, find somewhat either in his Sentiment or
Expression, immediately to contradict and raise a Dispute upon.
Rather than fail, criticize even his Grammar.

There is a business associate that I work with every once in
awhile who is very similar to this description. It is as if he
works hard to find areas in which to criticize. That is
sick...and rude. In fact, one time he did criticize my grammar.
How did it make me feel? It ticked me off...but I remind you (as
well as myself) the reason why people are disagreeable souls. It
is usually because they feel bad about themselves. They feel
inferior, lacking, and not worthwhile. It is sad, but true. So,
the next time you come across one of these disagreeable
individuals, instead of defending yourself, feel pity for them.
Understand they themselves are hurting...and forgive them.
And...commit yourself to never, ever behaving likewise.

3. If another should be saying an indisputably good Thing;
either give no Attention to it; or interrupt him; or draw away
the Attention of others; or, if you can guess what he would be
at, be quick and say it before him; or, if he gets it said, and
you perceive the Company pleas'd with it, own Locke, Bayle, or
some other eminent Writer; thus you deprive him of the
Reputation he might have gain'd by it, and gain some yourself,
as you hereby show your great Reading and Memory.

In a nutshell, don't be an arrogant, egotistical, pain in the
butt who nobody ever wants to be around.

4. When modest Men have been thus treated by you a few times,
they will chuse ever after to be silent in your Company; then
you may shine on without Fear of a Rival; rallying them at the
same time for their Dullness, which will be to you a new Fund of
Wit.

In delusion, the disagreeable individual takes their comrades'
silence as victory, when in reality, it is the ultimate in
defeat when it comes to human interactions.

So, we can choose success by doing the opposite of Franklin's
rules. The wise old gent leaves us with a final warning, "Thus
you will be sure to please yourself. The polite Man aims at
pleasing others, but you shall go beyond him even in that. A Man
can be present only in one Company, but may at the same time be
absent in twenty. He can please only where he is, you where-ever
you are not." Hmmm, chew on those words for awhile.

Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop

-------------
By Roberto Sedycias
-------------

The Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A features all of the upgrades
that Apple has included in its MacBook Pro 13.3-inch laptop and
its MacBook Pro 15.6-inch laptop, such as the ultra-speed bi-
directional Thunderbolt data/video connector and its daisy-
chaining ability. It supports the DisplayPort video interface
that allows one to interface various video devices such as high-
definition monitors or, with the proper adapter, a standard VGA
display.

The key feature the MacBook Air has that the other MacBook Pros
lack is a 64 GB solid-state disk drive. That's right, the
MacBook Pro uses a solid-state disk drive so that startup is
instant and reading and writing to disk is just as quick. The 64
GB solid-state drive should be have more than enough storage
space so that, unless one is storing huge video files on the
machine, one will have more than enough time before one has to
purchase an external hard disk drive to back up the solid-state
drive.

Really, though, given its screen sized and its network-centric
orientation through its support of WiFi standards 802.11
a/b/g/n, the small-screened MacBook MC968LL/A is really more
suited as the step between a tablet and a full-featured laptop.
It also supports two mini-USB ports through which one can
interface a wired Ethernet connection with the proper adapter.

Small, the 11.6-inch diagonal display supports up to 2560 by
1600 resolution, making this an obvious candidate for use with
3D applications. Apple certainly gets its money's worth out of
the Thunderbolt port in a device that is only 11.8 by 7.56 by.68
inches and which weights 2.38 pounds.

It also features the latest Bluetooth technology at 4.0 so one
can use Bluetooth devices with it, as well as Thunderbolt daisy-
chained devices. Bluetooth more than lends itself the MC968LL/A
as the laptop/netbook actually can operate independent of a
network for up to 5 hours on its battery. It pays to carry a
spare charger, however, for most needs, the 5 hours should be
enough.

The MC968LL/A uses a 1.6 GHz Intel Core I5 dual-core processor
and since it also runs the latest version of Apple's operating
system OS 10.7X (Lion), it should be able to multi-thread and
multi-task easily. The MC968LL/A comes with 2 GB of memory
installed that is upgradeable to 4 GB and uses the capable Intel
3000 graphics chipset.

Like other MacBooks, Apple has eliminated the buttons that most
trackpads have included and has expanded the size of the
trackpad, as well as its capability. Now, one can access and use
the trackpad to handle single-tapping, double-tapping, swiping,
as well as customized multi-finger movements.

The MC968LL/A supports excellent audio reproduction through its
speaker capability and when that is combined with the FaceTime
forward-facing camera, it can become a sensitive
videoconferencing or phoning device.

The MC968LLA has access to all of Apple's software, so one can
access the iTunes store as well as the app store and since it
uses the flash drive as its hard drive, they appear in an
instant.

Use Document Imaging to Maintain a Digital Archive

-------------
By Lois Brown
-------------

Growing concern for the environment is the driving factor for
the rising number of changes in business practices. One concept
growing in popularity is that of the paperless office. The use
of a personal computer these days goes beyond just typing. More
sectors are using it for communications and storage purposes.
Going digital is an ideal choice for almost all businesses and
organisations. One service becoming a staple is digital
archiving through document imaging.

Document scanning is the process of converting physical files
to electronic ones. These files become JPEG or PDF files after
conversion. Companies providing the process then attach
particular keywords to the image to make it easier to retrieve
via search.

This entire process is called document management. It is the
capture, storage, and retrieval of files. A digital solution
enables you to recall files and view them online. If you are
interested in such a service, look for a company storing files
in a secure online database. You should also seek companies
providing high quality image conversions and high-speed
processing. This will ensure the safekeeping of your documents
and work efficiency.

More companies and professionals around the world are using
document scanning and imaging for digital archiving purposes. It
comes as no surprise considering there are many advantages to
the practise. Here are some points to consider that might
encourage you to pursue the same.

Maximizing work hours

Although conventional archives are still workable options, it
has its drawbacks - one of which is the time it takes to find
files. Staff members often waste significant work hours looking
for lost files or documents. You can eliminate this problem by
moving your records to a digital platform. Scanning paper files
allows users to locate and recall captured information quickly.

Having your records on a digital index will make retrieving
much easier. You simply have to type in particular keywords and
the results will contain files relevant to your search. Company
employees can easily retrieve what they need and get back to
more pressing work matters.

Eco-friendliness

More companies are making the initiative to go green. This is
something you can achieve with document imaging. Continued use
of paper and hard copies will have a negative effect on your
company's ecological footprint. It adds to office clutter and
requires filing at the end of the day, month, or year. You might
not realise it, but papers add up. A digital platform will get
rid of this problem for you.

Practicality and Cost-effectiveness

This is the biggest advantage of using document scanning for
digital archiving. Doing so will allow you to reduce expenses on
resources such as paper and ink. All documents are stored online
or in a digital database. Uploading your files to an online
database will allow you to access the material from remote
locations. You no longer have to drive over to the office on
days when you are working at home or elsewhere. You have full
control of your records and they are all accessible with just a
few clicks of a button. Archiving using these two processes is
the more practical choice. It reduces your operations costs, is
more efficient, and environment friendly.

Lois Brown runs a family-owned business and recently made use
of document imaging and document scanning services.
