Stan,

Sorry to take so long to comment - my job got in the way of my hobby. :)

Re: we are having to abandon a superior platform for an inferior (and less
proven) one

Clearly, this is an area where we have to prove ourselves. We believe that
will happen and in the meantime we are working to make it possible for you
to retain the functionality that you have for years to come.

Re: the features that the new tools have and would like to see them
available for the investment we have already made in I/A

If by this you mean that the tool must run under Solaris we have a problem
or two:

1) Cost of development for both is quite high
2) Many of the features that we need or want to leverage aren't available in
Solaris.

As an example of something that we can't do under Solaris, consider the next
generate of IACC. It will have a drawing component that is MS's Visio. The
use of Visio to create loop diagrams reduced our development time, increased
the functionality of the configuration tool, and reduced our coding errors.

This is a huge step over the loop drawing tool in IACC V2.x which is a
homebrew and quite limited.

If on the other hand, you want the new tools to work with and preserve your
existing intellectual and physical property, we agree and we are working to
extend their current reach.

For example, a recent IACC release added more 'A-style' stations and we hope
to add more in the next couple of releases despite the fact that these are
modules that are no longer for sale.

Moreover, the IACC can configure either Solaris hosted or Windows hosted
controllers.

Clearly, large portions of your investment are preserved by the new tools.

I think that many of the legacy users (those of us who have had I/A since
nearly the beginning) who are heavily invested in Unix feel that we are
reaching the end of the line for innovation on that platform. What
concerns us "Unix fiends" is that
1) we feel like we are having to abandon a superior platform for an
inferior (and less proven) one, and
2) that we like the features that the new tools have and would like to see
them available for the investment we have already made in I/A.

Re: That would make them compelling by default, wouldn't it?

The OS used by the application is one factor in whether something is
compelling or not.

As for being forced to the new OS because new applications are being built
for a different OS, if you like what you have, we are continuing to
support
it.

Alex,

I believe you are sincere in this belief. But at the same time, from a
customer point of view, how can one not be a tad bit cynical when the
only applications being developed are specific to one OS. That would
make them compelling by default, wouldn't it?
