Andreas, you win the prize!

Yes, it was the default addition of East Asian languages support in our
version of XPPro that (I guess) causes our problem. I uncheck that option in
Control Panel, which requires a reboot, and the markers are fixed without
having to be recompiled.

Thanks to all who offered help. It was much appreciated.

Hi,

did you installed additional language support on win xp?

Please check the control panel -> regions- and language options ->
languagues and regions (or so) -> languages

Disable the additional language support for chinese and what ever.

I've only a german version and translated the menu entries on the fly.

Regards,
Andreas
