Andreas, you win the prize! Yes, it was the default addition of East Asian languages support in our version of XPPro that (I guess) causes our problem. I uncheck that option in Control Panel, which requires a reboot, and the markers are fixed without having to be recompiled. Thanks to all who offered help. It was much appreciated. Duc -- Duc M. I've only a german version and translated the menu entries on the fly.
