Just a tip, for those interested in using wide-screen monitors at lengths up to
100 ft. The old 100-ft VGA cables that Foxboro used to sell (not sure if they
still do) cannot support the full 1920 x 1080 resolution on an H90 with the 23"
monitor. It comes up as a standard 4:3 stretched to fit, and could not take
advantage of widescreen format FoxView graphics.
I found cables called SVGA or "high resolution VGA" which handle full
resolution at least up to 100 feet, with prices around $35 for a 50-ft version
and $50 for 75-ft and 100-ft versions (I got Tripp Lite brand). Easy to find
from an electronics store, way cheaper than the remote graphics unit (RGU) that
Foxboro sells which I think is Matrox. The RGU (with fiber optic cable)
obviously supports much longer distances.
I tested out the 50-foot SVGA cable and it looks perfect. There
are also signal-booster extenders available for long length digital video
signals like DVI, also inexpensive, but I haven't tried them.
Also in place of the fiber optic USB hub extensions that Foxboro sells, "USB
over Cat5/Cat6" transmitter/receiver setups which we have on our older AWs are
still available. I plan to reuse what we have, but Tripp Lite still sells them
for USB 2.0 up to 328-ft (100 m) distances, again much cheaper than the Foxboro
fiber optic solution. I don't see a real benefit of the fiber optic speed for
this application, and copper wires can stand up to a lot more abuse in the
industrial setting. We also tend to have Cat5 and Cat6 cables lying around
ready to run.
Hope this is useful for others setting up new or upgraded workstations.
