INDONESIAN ASSOCIATION OF GEOLOGISTS (IAGI) PROFESSIONAL DIVISION LUNCHEON TALK DATE : Thruesday, April 18th, 2002 TIME : 11.30 AM - 13.00 PM VENUE: Puri Putri Room Hotel Sahid Jaya Jakarta SUBJECT : PETROLOGY OF THE TERTIARY AGE BASEMENT RESERVOIR ROCKS IN INDONESIA SPEAKER : DR. Y. SUYATNO YUWONO (Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology, ITB Bandung) OVERVIEW Deal with fractured-reservoir rocks is totally realized very difficult in order to predict, evaluate, and to solve the relationships of the majortectonic trends with the detail fracture fabrics, which provide the majority of the porosity and permeability preservation for fluids or gas to flow. Basement rock is one of the sweet candidates as the potential fractured reservoir in oil and gas industries. Several well-known fractured reservoirs are being the primary target in some companies such as in the Corridor Block South Sumatra (Gulf Indonesia), Oseil Seram (Kufpec), Cuu Long sub basin in southern Vietnam region. Therefore, it is very honor forIAGI to invite Pak Yatno to give short presentation on his expertise in the basement rock petrology. ABSTRACT It is understandable that having a drilling program to penetrate the basement sometime requires more budgets, especially if the primary objective of the well is much shallower than the basement level. In this case, it is very reasonable if we have to take benefits of the samples taken from the basement (mostly crystalline rocks) by evaluating them properly. The more advanced such studies include petrography, radiometric dating, rock chemistry as well as isotopic analysis etc. That will provide powerful tools to interpret their petrogenetic significance of the basement. Subsequently, the tectonic environment can be interpreted in more accurate ways. The common basement rocks within the Tertiary Basins in Indonesia can be grouped into two general rock assemblages: igneous rocks (included volcanic rocks) and the metamorphic rocks. Those two kinds of rock association need different approaches to study. The igneous rock assemblage has to be focused intensely in chemistry and mineralogy approaches, while the metamorphic is needs to be stressed intensely in their mineralogy and textural aspects. The crystalline rocks emplaced at such tectonic environment and have distinct petrological characteristics. It is very possible to trace their tectonic position in time of emplacement if all required-petrogenetic data are available. In some cases, the knowledge of the petrology of the basement reservoir rocks may lead us to dissolve the problem of the reservoir geometry and to identify their geological behavior and nature. In this Luncheon Talk, some examples will be discussed, especially the igneous ones. BIOGRAPHY Y. Suyatno Yuwono was born in Sragen, Central Java on 9 February 1947.
