We hope you can join us at the Grant Besley Airport (NM03) Annual Fly-in
Breakfast on July 16 (8-11am) to honor and share memories of our good friend,
teacher and mentor. If you plan to fly in, please register at the NMPA/RAF
website, where procedural and safety information will be available. The runway
(7650’ alt; 4500’ x 40’ gravel) will be mowed the week prior, courtesy of Ron
Keller (who always does an excellent job in preparing the runway). Volunteers
from NMPA/RAF provided excellent air traffic and ground handling of the
aircraft from participating in the fly-in over the years and will be in charge
of those functions this year. This years’ fly-in is limited to 25 aircraft due
to air traffic and ground handling/parking considerations, so please contact
the NMPA website for registration and safety briefing information.
For Taos area pilots who decide to drive to the site, after crossing the Gorge
Bridge (Rte 64), go north about 4 miles to the Cerro Montoso turnoff; turn
right and follow the road about four miles to the crossroads to the John Dunne
Bridge. Turn left (north) and continue for 8 miles to the ranch entrance. Turn
right and travel about .7 miles to the runway. Please park on the west side of
the runway.
Over the years, Taos pilots who attend the Fly-in have volunteered to help with
breakfast preparation and serving. We would like to encourage the participation
of the Taos pilot community by assisting with the set-up, preparation and
serving of breakfast for the hungry pilots and guests. You can contact me
(786-210-8684) to discuss the details.
We will have time for sharing our memories of Grant; all stories, jokes,
reminiscences are welcome. His legendary feats as a pilot should not be
forgotten - those who were privileged to know those aspects of Grant’s career
can share them as well.
Looking forward to sharing this special occasion with you all!
Steve
