Planned cuts put Pottery Classes at the NCBI under threat.
As a past pupil of the NCBI Rehabilitation Training Centre on the Whitworth
Road, I have become aware that teaching hours are being reduced, and the
future quality of Pottery Classes for the blind & visually Impaired is
under threat.
The Ceramics Teacher Terry Cartin, a graduate of the National College of
Art & Design, who is himself visually impaired, has been a role model & an
inspiration to hundreds of students over the last 17 years, from both the
NCBI Rehabilitation & Iona Training Centres. Terry works at NCBI two days a
week, and his enthusiasm and dedication has enriched our lives, allowing us
to fully participate & to tap into our creativity, and sometimes discover
creativity that we didnât even know we had.
Working with clay is a fantastic experience & shows us that the only limit
is our imagination. The making process is empowering & gives a great sense
of accomplishment. The act of making builds confidence and can lead to a
shift in the attitude of others, who might consider you to be on the
scrapheap. It is another language, and a joy to achieve a finished product,
and say, I made that.
