Fighting Blindness will unveil a new patient guide to support people diagnosed
with a range of retinal conditions on Tuesday, December 2 at 6pm. The guide
will be launched at an evening reception attended by ophthalmologists,
scientists and patients in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)
Atrium, Dublin. The publication, A Guide To Conditions of the Retina, is
supported by Bayer Healthcare and proudly endorsed by the Irish College of
Ophthalmologists (ICO), the Association of Optometrists in Ireland, the Genetic
and Rare Disorders Organisation (GRDO).

The guide sets out information about a range of rare inherited retinal
conditions including retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease
and many more, as well as information about more common conditions such as
age-related macular degeneration and diabetes related sight loss. It provides
information about the causes, symptoms, any available treatments and research
into these conditions. It details how the eyes work and defines the technical
terms used to detail the parts of the eye, as well as highlighting the roles of
the various eye health professionals that people come into contact with and
what tests may be carried out at an at an appointment. The Guide also sets out
questions for patients, who can sometimes feel overwhelmed, to ask at their eye
examination so that they are as fully informed as possible, as well as pointing
to Irish and international patient, medical and research organisations for
additional information and support.
