Hi BarryI did a google translate on an android by taking a photo of a French
menu I printed off the web. Not so straightforward never mind trying to tap
around this. There are 3 possible input options camera, microphone and writing
(not typing). The camera is up near the top left. After tapping ( or doubly
tapping in TalkBack as Barry explained) on camera you align the text and take a
photo by tapping on an icon at bottom centre. A screen then pops up giving you
an option to select certain areas or select all. Tap on select all at the
bottom. Next swipe to right at top of screen to translate. Two versions appear
the top is the original and the bottom half is English. You can tap the English
speaker icon at the top left to listen to the English translation. I took this
under a bright desk light and the translation was not bad so you you can avoid
the snails with anchovies or horse steak with garlic sauce. An interesting
project but you would need to be in a bright restaurant with free WiFi and to
have a few attempts to get a reasonable translation.

I have used google translate on a web browser before.
web site: translate.google.ie and it will even translate from English to
Irish and vice versa.
There is an app on the i phone and android called google translate which I
find useful.
On the i phone, I tried the following to translate from English to French
on the google translate app.
swipe from left to right until you get.
Original language: english.
swipe over "Swap languages button".
swipe to translated language: French.
If language is not french, double tap and swipe from left to right until
you get french and double tap.
You then have several options.
swipe left to right until you get to "touch to type" and double tap.
This will allow you to enter text for example. "Can I have a menu please?"
You can then swipe down to go and double tap.
You can then swipe down to "speak translated text" and double tap.
This speaks out the translated text in french.
"Puis je avoir un menu s'il vous plait?"
My French is rusty and I am not sure is that a good translation.
You can also swipe to share, copy translated text etc.
Another option is voice dictation in the google translate app.
If you wish to clear what you have been doing in the app, swipe back to
"clear text button" and double tap.
swipe left to right to get to "translate speech" button and double tap.
The app would appear to start listening immediately.
I said "What time is it?" and then said nothing.
Sometimes the voice dictation stops promptly and other times it is not so
prompt.
The app translated the English I spoke to "Quelle heure est il?" which
sounds like a good translation.
The voice dictation has recorded voice over feedback from time to time.
If you wish to clear what you have been doing in the app, swipe back to
"clear text button" and double tap.
Last thing I have tried out and this was Mary's original question this
morning.
I suggested getting knfb reader with french selected as the input/ o c r
language to take a photo of the french menu and to double tap to select all
and copy the french text.
Lastly, open google translate, change the original language from English to
French and the translated language from French to English.
This of course could also be done by selecting the swap languages button.
Then swipe to "touch to type - text field" and double tap.
Then double tap and select paste.
Then swipe to go to translate.
If you wish to clear what you have been doing in the app, swipe back to
"clear text button" and double tap.
Going the knfb reader route though with google translate is very time
consuming and not everyone has the â¬90 K N F B reader app.
When Mary downloaded the google translate app and was swiping through the
buttons, I heard voice over say a new option called "instant camera
translation.".
For this to work, the original language needs to be French and the
translated language needs to be English.
So I decided to play with it but I was not very successful.
I put an a, 4 page i printed with a french menu in front of my i phone 5 c
and swiped to scan and double tapped.
It then said "looking for french text, use your finger to highlight the
text."
I then swiped to "select all button" and double tapped.
It appears to have identified some french words and translated them to
english but very little.
Perhaps it was the quality of the french menu I had printed or the note so
good i phone 5 c camera.
Anyway just reporting my findings with the google translate app.
I hope others are more successful with the instant camera translation.
Would be great to hear how the google translate app works on the android.
