Hi everyone in Cork, Dublin, Kilkenny and Dundalk,
Further to Barry's intriguing message below, I have a proposal as to how we
might use Voicebridge to make it possible for people to join us who, for
some reason, cannot come to an exchange club venue.
I have copied a portion of the question and answer session here from the
Voicebridge web site:
Q: If there is no registration required and if I can create a conference
room instantly, how can I make sure no third party is listening to our
conference?
A: You have several options: first, you could choose a difficult to guess
room number, like 55*33*77. Second, as soon as every participant has joined
the conference, make yourself a moderator by pressing 1, and afterwards
enter the moderator menu by pressing * (star). In the moderator menu you
simply press 2 and your room will be locked and no further people can join
your conference. Also, as soon as someone joins the room you will be
notified by an audio signal.
Q: How can I remove someone from the conference?
A: Press 3 in the moderator menu and the last person that joined the
conference will get kicked out.
In the light of these questions and their answers, I suggest we establish a
permanent and unique room for FB-Exchange by making use of the fact that
each character from "a" to "j" is used, in Braille, to represent the numbers
1 to 0 as a means of deciding the sequence of numbers for our room based on
the word "fb-exchange". We would use an asterisk for the other letters that
do not equate to a braille number.
For those who are not familiar with braille, the letters a - j represent the
numbers 1 -0 when preceded by a number sign (#) in braille.
hence the letters
fb-exchange would be represented as:
62*5*381*75 where the "-" and the "x" would be represented by an asterisk.
I propose that we set up a room with the code consisting of the first four
characters of the above string. In other words,, to begin with, the code
would be :
62*5
If we find that someone else keeps finding it, we can extend the number
further along the string above. This way, people could easily remember the
room number by simply converting the words "fb-exchange" into its braille
equivalent with asterisks for the bad bits.
I would like a permanent, unique meeting room number for the whole country
so that anyone who wants to can call in on the day of a chosen meeting and
find themselves at the meeting whether it is in cork, Dublin, Kilkenny, or
Dundalk.
These are the places where FB-Exchange groups are currently established.
If each venue makes sure that notice is sent to the FB-Exchange List, then
everyone would know where a meeting was taking place and could dial into the
FB-Exchange room number, ie.e 62*5.
It would mean that each centre would have an ordinary dial-up phone set to
speaker mode on the meeting table, which is dialled into the voice bridge
number 021491491 and room 62*5 for the duration of the meeting. This would
open the meeting room for others to dial in to join the meeting.
It would be free to everyone who has a landline or mobile with free calls to
local and national calls in Ireland.
Likewise, any friends in England, Spain or America could join in as well
making a call to their national number for that country and using our room
number 62*5.

not how you pronounce the name, say niamh correctly, and siri will say it
correctly.

in other parts of their houses.

At one of the Dublin Exchange Club meetings in 2015 which I attended, I was
chatting to Cearbhall.
After an hour, I realised that Cearbhall's voice was a voice from the sky
via a facetime connection.
The quality of facetime was so good that it sounded like Cearbhall was
actually in the room.
Something that might be of interest for both the Dublin & Cork Groups,
particularly when people cannot attended a meeting.
I've used a German service many years ago called Voice bridge which is still
active.

Essentially, its a conferencing service & has local access numbers around
the globe.
In Ireland the local access number is in Cork 0212357000.
To give you an example, at one of the exchange club meetings, one of the
members present with a flat rate call package could dial the local access
number, 0212357000 and then enter the conference number followed by the
pound key when prompted.
For the Cork meeting on a Saturday, you could enter 021# for example.
Conference 021# is then active.
Other people who could not make the meeting could then dial the access
number and enter 021# for the conference number.
Interestingly, there is no limits on the number of participants.
For the Dublin meeting on a Monday at 11am, you could enter 001# for the
conference number & take things from there.

When in a conference you can hit the following keys on your keypad:
1 = Become moderator
2 = Check room number
9 = Call operator (a human being at VoiceBridge)
0 = Exit room (and create or join a new one)
* (star) = Enter user / moderator menu
User menu:
1 = Mute/unmute your microphone
4 = Decrease the volume of the conference (press multiple times, then exit
with 8)
6 = Increase the volume of the conference (press multiple times, then exit
with 8)
7 = Decrease your microphones volume (press multiple times, then exit with
8)
9 = Increase your microphones volume (press multiple times, then exit with
8)
8 = Return to room
Moderator menu:
2 = Lock/unlock room (no more participants allowed)
3 = Kick out the last participant that joined the room
8 = Return to room
Voice bridge gives the following example.
Let's say you are located in Germany. Just call our access number in
Hannover and at the same time have your grandma in Russia call our access
number in Moscow, then both of you simply join into the same conference room
and speak with each other like you are used to. But with the advantage that
both you and your grandma are only paying for a local landline call.
There is no limit on the number of participants. You can have a chat with
your grandma in Russia, father and mother in Sweden, sister and brother in
Canada at the same time if you feel like it. While you are waiting for the
other participant(s) to join your room we'll play some live internet radio
for you.
May be of use as Facetime is only a one to one connection.
Maybe you can do the above over Skype also but I am not familiar with it.
