Chris,
You handled the meeting brilliantly! We must get you to do that again soon.
All the best,
Cearbhall

Apologies: Ken Walsh, Jackie McBrearty, Martha Parkinson, Gavin Allman.
Paul suffered a major outage during the week when the virgin media
service had a major WIFI blackout all over Ireland. After a great deal
of trying and head-scratching, he found that he was able, at least, to
get radio service by using data instead of WIFI.
Martin wondered if the driver in the popular Blind-Drive game drove on
the left or on the right. Sadly, Jackie was not present to answer that.
Jackie was anxious to draw the attention of members to a serious
problem with the Bank of Ireland app on the iPhone and had dropped in
to the meeting early to do so. The problem arises in the effort to use
Strong customer authentication. When shopping on Tesco, recently, she
was told a notification was sent to her primary device that she needed
to approve. Jackie went into the app. There is no need to log in but
you need to swipe to "waiting for approval". This is when the issues
started. To approve you need to double-tap and hold. This proved very
difficult. The transaction was eventually approved but it took a long
time. Jackie tweeted BOI and she was told that NCBI had approved this
app and they see no accessibility issues with it. Jackie will make
contact with NCBI labs on Monday and find out why this one finger double tap
and hold is deemed acceptable for blind usage.
Nobody at the meeting had heard anything from NCBI on this unique gesture.
Four BOI customers were present and all back Jackie in raising a
protest with NCBI and with BOI. Apparently, the sighted customer has
merely to swipe to the right to give approval. So, why is Voiceover different?
Stuart is finding the Revolut card really handy and would like to use
it to send money into subscriptions and other systems instead of only
paying bills. Sadly, there were no other Revolut customers to offer an answer.
By this time, Cearbhall was tearing his hair out (and there's little
of that left anyway!) because Voiceover was forced to near silence
whilst anyone was speaking in Zoom. He endeavoured to make Chris Host
so that he could leave the meeting and try to find what was wrong.
However, even that simple act proved almost inaccessible while
Voiceover was so faint. Strangely, the audio from his phone was
leaking into the meeting also almost as if he were "Sharing" his audio
with zoom. No such action had been initiated. To make a long and
tedious story shorter, he found, eventually, that the After Shokz
headset, or its Bluetooth carrier, were causing the problem. By
switching over to the old-fashioned Apple wired earbuds plugged directly into
the iPhone, all communication was restored and at a reasonable volume.
Meanwhile, the chat carried on and soon arrived at the topic of
Notifications and general information being fed by the latest Windows
10 update into people's PC's. Most found this annoying and Paul found
that he was able to tolerate the interference by minimising the
streaming window. Cearbhall confirmed that this was the generally
advised method being recommended on user sites.
Martin is encouraging everyone to take a look at the NCBI's "Blind Shell"
mobile phone. It is a WIDI phone but operates with buttons rather than
a touch scree. It carries a number of apps that are similar to those
generally found on the iPhone. It is aimed at older users and is
considerably cheaper than the iPhone or Android phone. The NCBI is the
source of all info on this device.
Stuart has updated his iPhone to the latest and now finds that the app
switcher is in trouble. Swiping up or down to an app frequently opens
a different one from that spoken by VoiceOver.
Chris had a question on managing iCloud Backup. He was informed that
his phone was using 3.5gigs of storage but when he went to look at the
data usage on his iPhone, it reported that he was only using 1.3 Gigs!
He then had a look at his iPad, but still there was no evidence of
high usage. In fact, the iPhone now reported that he has 5 Gigs of iCloud
storage available!
The meeting ended and all gremlins, goblins and other impish forces
were dismissed for the week.
All the best,
Cearbhall
