backup exchange server over internet

Hi,
Is it possible to set up a backup exchange server over the internet, i.e.
the two servers are geographically distant and the only connection is over
the internet, and there is no common "forest" or Active Directory
connectivity between the two, save perhaps via VPN? (the built-in RAS
VPN).
