My 2 cents: Backup Exec Version 10 has been very good to me regarding Exchange backups. I do both brick backups as well as database backups (of course). I do incremental backups of the database every hour throughout the day too and it works great. In regards to mailbox (brick) backups, they are good if you just need to restore an email or two from a mailbox, or a folder. Using the Recovery Storage Group is the best way to restore an entire mailbox (or database for that matter) you believe is corrupted. I don't, however, believe that it is an efficient way to restore individual items. The reason a lot of people steer away from mailbox backups is because it uses MAPI to do it and it isn't exactly reliable (although I have had zero issues when I needed to restore stuff). Also, you should definitely use Veritas' tech support site. I find it an excellent resource in solving pretty much any error I have ever had with Backup Exec, any version. Hope that helps just a little :-) ________________________________ From: exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Bruce J. Version 9 gave me a lot of problems. I thought that if you did not backup Mailboxes you could only restore complete database and not single emails. What about if a user comes in 3 weeks asking for mail he has shift+delete by mistake. Can we do single email recovery in this method? ________________________________ From: exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Martin Blackstone Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 4:48 AM To: exchangelist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ExchangeList] Re: Veritas Errors with Exchange 2003 This is an easy one. Stop backing up mailboxes. You just need to backup the mailbox stores (public and private). Then read up on Recovery Storage Groups. http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Exchange-Dial-tone-Restore-Method-Pa rt1.html ________________________________ From: exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:exchangelist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Technical Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 4:31 AM To: exchangelist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ExchangeList] Veritas Errors with Exchange 2003 Hi All I have inherited a SBS 2003 server running veritas Backup Exec 9.1 The veritas software backs up some but not all of the contents of the users mail boxes. Access is denied to calendar items and also random messages in the In Box and Sent Items. Veritas is running with the correct admin rights and can access the mail boxes and back up most but not all items. Any thoughts appreciated. Frustrated Admin
