My 2 cents:

Backup Exec Version 10 has been very good to me regarding Exchange
backups. I do both brick backups as well as database backups (of
course). I do incremental backups of the database every hour throughout
the day too and it works great. In regards to mailbox (brick) backups,
they are good if you just need to restore an email or two from a
mailbox, or a folder. Using the Recovery Storage Group is the best way
to restore an entire mailbox (or database for that matter) you believe
is corrupted. I don't, however, believe that it is an efficient way to
restore individual items. The reason a lot of people steer away from
mailbox backups is because it uses MAPI to do it and it isn't exactly
reliable (although I have had zero issues when I needed to restore
stuff).

Also, you should definitely use Veritas' tech support site. I find it
an excellent resource in solving pretty much any error I have ever had
with Backup Exec, any version.

Hope that helps just a little :-)

I would upgrade to version 10 and patch it up. Version 9 gave me a lot
of problems. I thought that if you did not backup Mailboxes you could
only restore complete database and not single emails.

Thanks Bruser

Sorry for jumping in,

Damn this is much more work to do. What about if a user comes in 3 weeks
asking for mail he has shift+delete by mistake. Can we do single email
recovery in this method?

This is an easy one.
Stop backing up mailboxes. You just need to backup the mailbox stores
(public and private).

Then read up on Recovery Storage Groups.

Hi All

I have inherited a SBS 2003 server running veritas Backup Exec 9.1

The veritas software backs up some but not all of the contents of the
users mail boxes.

Access is denied to calendar items and also random messages in the In
Box and Sent Items.

Veritas is running with the correct admin rights and can access the mail
boxes and back up most but not all items.

Any thoughts appreciated.
