Restore question

Hi
I need to perform a restore of one of my exchange 2000 servers in order to
retrieve some old email.
Unfortunately the restore is required from early December and the only place we
have the data is on tape.
I don't want the restore to interfere with the current config and working of
our exchange set up and need to know the best way of achieving this. The data
I need to retrieve is for accounts that are still active and in use today.
Would I need to set up a new AD forest etc?
Any help would be appreciated.
