It is never supported to change the name of an exchange server.
Therefore, installing in a child domain and doing move mailbox, then
removing the old server is the proper method.

Subject: [ExchangeList] Moving Exchange to new child domain
Hi;
I have Exchange 2003 installed in a parent domain and want to move the
server to a child domain.. Do I need to install the exchange on a server in
the child domain and move the mailboxes or is there another way of handling
this?
Thanks for your help.
