I just have to share this moving experience with other teachers. I just
received a phone call from a caller identifying himself as Avi Masika. The name
struck a bell but I wasn't sure and asked him where I knew him from. He then
reconfirmed my first thoughts that he had been a student of mine many years ago
in the Rogosin Comprehensive High School in Or Yehuda. After a few minutes of
excited chatting, I asked him why he had called. He explained that he had been
listening to the radio and heard a program about having the host search for
favorite stories. He asked the host to look for The Devil and Daniel Webster, a
story we had read in class in the early 70s. He then explained that he always
thought about the story and told his daughters (aged 26 and 21) about me and
the story. He called now because - over 30 years later - he wants his daughters
to meet me. He got the name of a shop that carries the book with the story and
plans on buying it. Can we ever know the effect literature can have on our
students? The ability to identify with a character so different from people he
knew in Or Yehuda enriched his entire life.
This is truly the greatest reward a teacher can have. I am sure you all have
similar stories if you have years of experience, and if you are new to the
profession - just know the kind of effect teachers really have.
