I tell the students to use the word "really" instead of very because it can
be used before verbs and adjectives.  Whenever they think of מאד substitute
באמת and just drop the use of very, in writing as well.  Good advice I got
from a colleague.  It really works.

Does anyone out there have an idea how to get students to stop saying things
like "I very love to x" or "I very love that song"? I understand that they
are mentally translating from l1, which is a hard habit to break, but I
would really like to help them stop (at least for 8 minutes or so this
coming Sunday) :).

I get them to substitute 'really' for 'very' and to say "I really love..."
I also explain that 'very' can only come before an adjective.
In the higher grades you can practice "I love it very much."
