be penalized if you use their for a singular antecedent.

Having recently completed an MA in Eglish Teaching and Learning at Liverpool 
University I feel I may be able to contribute something to the discussion 
about the singular usage of "their".

We were instructed that in England politically correct speech directs the 
speaker towards using "their" instead of his/her:  ie:  "Let me know about 
their intentions"..  Dissertation writers are in fact penalised if this form 
is not used
